✅ Script:
Narrator: Welcome back to 5 Minute English where we help you sound more like a native English speaker.
Bill: I’m Bill.
Alice: And I’m Alice.
Bill: Today we’re diving into some of the most common mistakes English learners make…
Alice: and more importantly, how to fix them.
Bill: Let’s jump right in.
Alice: First up is a classic mix up we hear all the time: fun versus funny.
Bill: Oh yes, this one comes up a lot. Someone might say the trip was so funny.
Alice: Exactly. And while a trip can definitely have funny moments, what they usually mean is that it was enjoyable.
Bill: Here’s the simple way to remember it. Funny is something that makes you laugh, like a joke or a comedy movie.
Bill: Fun is something you enjoy, like a party, a vacation, or a game night.
Alice: That’s a great way to put it.
Bill: Alright, here’s another one that’s a bit more subtle: saying “married with someone.
Alice: Right, as in “he is married with a lawyer.”
Bill: Yes, and that sounds natural in some languages, but not in English. In English you are always married to someone.
Bill: So the correct sentence is: “He is married to a lawyer.”
Alice: The only time we really use “married with” is when talking about children. For example, “They are married with three kids.”
Bill: That’s an important distinction.
Alice: It’s those small prepositions that really change everything.
Bill: Now let’s talk about a grammar mistake that can make sentences very confusing: double negatives.
Alice: Oh yes, like saying “I don’t know nothing about it.”
Bill: Exactly.
Alice: In English, two negatives in the same sentence cancel each other out, so the meaning becomes confusing or incorrect. The fix is to only use one negative. You can say “I don’t know anything” or “I know nothing.”
Bill: Much clearer. One negative per sentence.
Alice: We’re almost out of time, but there are so many more.
Bill: Like confusing borrow and lend, or getting question word order wrong.
Alice: Absolutely. The best way to improve is to listen closely to how native speakers actually speak.
Bill: Those small details make a huge difference over time. That’s all for today’s lesson at 5 Minute English. Thanks for listening.
Alice: Keep practicing and we’ll catch you soon at 5 Minute English.
