1. Direct Answer
2. Detail or Reason
3. Return Question
This formula helps create longer, more natural conversations.
▼ Reveal
The detail or reason is missing.
Better answer:
"Yes, I do. I listen to music every day on my way to work. What about you?"
▼ Reveal
A detail gives the other person something to talk about.
It makes your answer more interesting and helps the conversation continue naturally.
▼ Reveal
"Yes, I do. I enjoy cooking because it helps me relax after work. What about you? Do you like cooking?"
▼ Reveal
A return question is a question you ask after answering.
Examples:
• How about you?
• What about you?
• And you?
It shows interest and keeps the conversation moving.
▼ Reveal
They are giving too much detail.
One or two short sentences are usually enough before asking a return question.
▼ Reveal
"Yes, I do. My favorite dish is tacos al pastor because they're delicious. What's your favorite Mexican dish?"

How to Keep a Conversation Going 💬
Many English learners answer questions with only one word, such as "yes," "no," or "fine." While these answers are correct, they often stop the conversation and make it difficult for the other person to continue speaking.
A simple way to sound more natural is to expand your answers by adding extra information.
Step 1: Direct Answer
Answer the question clearly first.
Example:
"Do you like coffee?"
✅ "Yes, I do."
Step 2: Add a Detail
Give one reason, fact, or personal detail.
Example:
"I usually have a cup before work."
Step 3: Ask a Return Question
Show interest in the other person.
Example:
"How about you?"
Complete Answer
✅ "Yes, I do. I usually have a cup before work. How about you?"
Common Conversation Mistakes ⚠️
- Giving only a one-word answer.
- Skipping the detail or reason.
- Talking for too long without asking a question.
- Forgetting to show interest in the other person.
