1️⃣ What Is an Article?

An article is a small word we use before a noun.

English has two types of articles:

  • a / anindefinite article (not specific)
  • thedefinite article (specific)

2️⃣ A / An = Not Specific

We use a/an when we talk about something general or not specific.

  • Let’s read a book. (Any book.)
  • I want to see a movie. (Any movie.)
  • She wants a dog. (Not a specific dog.)

✅ A or An?

Use “a” before consonant sounds:
  • a dog
  • a car
  • a university (sounds like yoo-niversity)
  • a European country (sounds like yer-o-pean)
Use “an” before vowel sounds:
  • an apple
  • an elephant
  • an hour (silent h)
  • an unusual problem

👉 Remember: It’s about the sound you hear, not just the letter.

3️⃣ The = Specific

We use the when both people know which thing we’re talking about.

  • I read the book you gave me. (Specific book.)
  • The dog that bit me ran away. (Specific dog.)
  • I saw the movie we talked about.
👉 If it’s clear which one, use the.

4️⃣ Count and Noncount Nouns

Count Nouns (things you can count)

You can use a/an.

  • a car
  • a teacher
  • a bottle

Noncount Nouns (things you can’t count individually)

You cannot use a/an alone.

❌ a water
✅ a bottle of water
