The lesson explains how to use DO and Does in questions.

By the end of this lesson, you can:

  • Ask WH-questions

🧠 The Basic Rule

We use:

  • Do → I / You / We / They
  • Does → He / She / It

👉 The main verb is always in the base form (no -s).

🧩 Question Structure

✅ A) Yes / No Questions

Do/Does + subject + base verb?

Do / Does Subject Main Verb Example
Do you like Do you like coffee?
Do they work Do they work?
Does she play Does she play hockey?
Does he live Does he live here?

✅ B) WH-Questions

WH word + do/does + subject + base verb?

WH Word do/does subject main verb example
Where does he live Where does he live?
What do you eat What do you eat for breakfast?
When do they study When do they study?
Why does she work Why does she work late?
How do you go How do you go to work?

⚠ Important Rule

❌ Does she plays soccer?
✅ Does she play soccer?

When we use does, the verb goes back to base form.

🔎 BE Questions vs DO Questions

✅ A) Verb “Be” Questions

Structure:
Am / Is / Are + subject?

Statement Question
She is happy. Is she happy?
They are tired. Are they tired?
He is a teacher. Is he a teacher?

👉 We DO NOT use do/does with “be”.

 

✅ B) Action Verb Questions (Simple Present)

Structure:
Do/Does + subject + base verb?

She works here. Does she work here?
They live in Mexico. Do they live in Mexico?
He plays soccer. Does he play soccer?

👉 Use do/does with action verbs.

🌎 4. English vs Spanish

In Spanish, do/does are NOT translated.

¿Dónde vive ella? Where does she live?
¿Por qué trabaja tarde? Why does he work late?
¿Qué comen ellos? What do they eat?

👉 “Do” and “does” are grammar helpers.
👉 They do NOT have a direct translation.

⚠ Common A1 Mistakes

❌ 1. Adding -S after DOES

Does she plays soccer?
✅ Does she play soccer?

❌ 2. Using DO with He/She/It

Do she work here?
✅ Does she work here?

❌ 3. Using DOES with I/You/They

Does they live here?
✅ Do they live here?

❌ 4. Using DO with BE

Do you are tired?
✅ Are you tired?
