1️⃣ What Is an Article?
An article is a small word we use before a noun.
English has two types of articles:
- a / an → indefinite article (not specific)
- the → definite article (specific)
2️⃣ A / An = Not Specific
We use a/an when we talk about something general or not specific.

- a European country (sounds like yer-o-pean)
- an apple
- an elephant
- an hour (silent h)
- an unusual problem
👉 Remember: It’s about the sound you hear, not just the letter.
3️⃣ The = Specific
We use the when both people know which thing we’re talking about.
- I read the book you gave me. (Specific book.)
- The dog that bit me ran away. (Specific dog.)
- I saw the movie we talked about.
4️⃣ Count and Noncount Nouns
Count Nouns (things you can count)
