🧠 The Basic Rule

We use:

  • Don’t (do not) → I / You / We / They
  • Doesn’t (does not) → He / She / It

👉  The main verb is always in the base form (no -s).

🧩 Sentence Structure

✅ A) Yes / No Questions

Subject + don’t/doesn’t + base verb

Subject Don’t / Doesn’t Main Verb Example
I don’t like I don’t like coffee.
You don’t work You don’t work on Sunday.
They don’t live They don’t live there.
She doesn’t play She doesn’t play hockey.
He doesn’t drink He doesn’t drink tea.

⚠ Important Rule

❌ She doesn’t plays soccer.
✅ She doesn’t play soccer.

When we use doesn’t, the verb goes back to base form.

🔎 BE Questions vs DO Negatives

✅ A) Verb “Be” Negatives

Structure:
Subject + am not / is not / are not

positive negative
She is happy. She isn’t happy./She’s not happy.
They are tired. They aren’t tired./They’re not tired.
He is a teacher. He isn’t a teacher./He’s not a teacher.

👉  We DO NOT use don’t/doesn’t with “be”.

❌ She doesn’t be happy.
✅ She isn’t happy.

✅ B) Action Verb Negatives (Simple Present)

Structure:
Subject + don’t/doesn’t + base verb

positive negative
She works here. She doesn’t work here.
They live in Mexico. They don’t live in Mexico.
He plays soccer. He doesn’t play soccer.

👉 Use don’t/doesn’t with action verbs.

🌎 4. English vs Spanish

In Spanish, we change the verb form.
In English, we use don’t / doesn’t.

Ella no trabaja aquí. She doesn’t work here.
No estudian inglés. They don’t study English.

👉 “Don’t” and “doesn’t” are grammar helpers.
👉 They do NOT translate word-for-word.

❌ 1. Adding -S after DOESN’T

She doesn’t works here.
✅ She doesn’t work here.

❌ 2. Using DON’T with He/She/It

He don’t like coffee.
✅ He doesn’t like coffee.

❌ 3. Using DOESN’T with I/You/They

They doesn’t live here.
✅ They don’t live here.

❌ 4. Using DON’T with BE

She doesn’t be tired.
✅ She isn’t tired.
